Mystical Love Poetry: Scandalous History

Mystical Love Poetry: ScandalousWith today’s culture of talking about everything, making everything public, sex on all the media outlets we often forget how private sexuality and love was in our history.

Intimacy used to be considered “intimate.” Something that happened with discretion and behind closed doors.

Religion was the defining factor in society. Everyone followed the same practices and they were often very rigid and strict cultural norms.

The Sufi poets, like Rumi and Hafiz, were radical in this regard.

They wrote of God as a lover. They wrote of spirituality using sexual imagery. They saw God in the face of their lover and expressed the essence that lies between the lines of love and loving.

So lovely, so bold, so radical.

These ancient mystical love poets have infused my own poetry with the same sensual energy.

It’s all about the loving. Our relationship with our Earthly lovers and our relationship with our Heavenly God and Heavenly Mother, a reflection of each other.
