John Roger: The Spiritual Counselor on My Spiritual Path

One reason that I love my work and feel called to spiritual counseling in Colorado, to help people expand their own soul awareness of loving, is that a spiritual counselor and teacher has walked with me on my personal spiritual path for the last 40 years.

When I was 23, after my addiction recovery, I realized that I had to figure out how to navigate my spiritual journey on my own, without the drugs that had been part of my original spiritual awakening.

I was thirsty. I needed to find a teacher who was aware of how everything worked and could help me discover my own soul awareness and loving.

I had been reading many books from the Bible to Yoga to the Bhagavad Gita and many others. This was great for knowledge sake, but it wasn’t allowing me to really experience and learn from a live person; someone who knew what was going on and could help me.

I set out to discover a teacher, prepared to find a guru in a nice monk’s robe. I was surprised to meet my teacher, John Roger, in a dream one night. It surprised me because I had been looking for someone far more eccentric than a white man in contemporary clothing teaching in Los Angeles.

But he had all the qualities of a teacher that I was looking for. I joined his organization 36 years ago, the Movement of Spiritual Inner Awareness, MSIA and still actively learn and journey within the community.

Because he helped me, I pay it forward by helping others as a spiritual counselor.
